More About Us

Founded in 2016, Team 6220 is a group of Los Alamitos High School students who aspire to work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields or simply have an interest in these extensive industries. We pursue our collective passion by participating in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, where we have been finalists in multiple regional tournaments and attended the 2016 world championship. To create our robot, we use professional-grade technology, software, and machinery, working directly with professionals in the field. Our team members learn from our mentors and teach each other skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), 3D printing, CNC machining, computer programming, business, and much more. Specifically, our team is organized into eight subteams:

Our team emphasizes the FIRST philosophies of Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition in everything we do, from our day-to-day meetings to our stellar community outreach. We pride our team on being exceptionally student-driven: while our mentors offer invaluable advice and guidance, it is our passionate members and students who work together to achieve as a team and a community.

Team Philosophy

In addition to FIRST competitive values, 6220 uses a set of team pillars to guide all operations:

  1. Student-led, student-driven

  2. You get out what you put in

  3. Continuity, think about the team’s future

  4. Find out what you want to learn and learn what you need to know

  5. Best idea always wins, not the idea of the highest authority

  6. Steal from the best, innovate the rest

Of all these pillars, "student-led, student-driven" is by far the most critical, serving as our team's motto. Our #1 goal as a team is to provide genuine, practical experience to our members—not only in technical skills like manufacturing and mechanical engineering, but also interpersonal skills like leadership, teamwork, and discipline. Maintaining a student-led, student-driven team allows us to best accomplish this goal; mentors provide key experience, knowledge and safety, but they do not make decisions for students or do any work that could be completed by members. Yes, our members make mistakes, but our unique student-led philosophy means that every mistake serves as a point of learning for our members and allows both the team and individual members to improve. Our team pillars are not simply figures of speech--each one works to help the team accomplish our mission of providing members with real-world, robotics-, engineering-, and business-related experience by competing in annual FRC competitions while making an impact in our community through STEM-related outreach.
